Facing Bricks

Brick is here

This traditional building material is back in vogue with architects, not only for stable structures but to display innovative design and craftsmanship.

Taylor Maxwell partner with UK and European brick manufacturers, to supply a large range of bricks to meet the appearance and budget requirements of your project. Our range includes a broad spectrum of colours including reds, oranges, blues, greys, yellows and creams. In addition to this, we also supply glazed bricks and create bespoke brick blends to meet the vision of your design.

Modern, fired, clay bricks are formed using one of three manufacturing processes – soft mud (stock), dry press (handmade), or extruded (wirecut), each have a unique influence on the size, shape, texture and colour of the finished product.

Despite being at the higher end of most budgets, handmade bricks are increasingly becoming a preferred option. They offer increased texture and depth with imperfections that create a sense of warmth and are more versatile than mass produced facings.

Types of bricks

 Wirecut

Wirecut bricks are produced by extruding a column of clay through a die and then cut into individual bricks using wires. Wirecut bricks tend to be very uniform in shape with precise edge and extremely good tolerance.

 Handmade

Individual bricks are hand thrown into moulds which produces a gently creased texture in the face of the bricks. Handmade bricks usually have an indent in the top known as a 'frog'.

 Stock

Also known as soft mud bricks, stock bricks are produced using clay with a relatively high water content, taken from rivers or quarries. Stock bricks often have more varied edges and like handmade bricks, they usually have a frog.

 Waterstruck

Produced by pushing clay through rectangular dies using water as a lubricant to form the bricks. Waterstruck bricks tend to have an irregular appearance and are often solid without a frog.

The benefits of clay brickwork

Bricks will work in almost all built environments, and offer a permanence that few other materials can match. Clay bricks will weather naturally over time and do not require routine maintenance and redecoration.

With specialists based in 12 offices across the UK, Taylor Maxwell can provide local knowledge of the bricks used on existing schemes, or bricks suited to the local architectural style. We can then provide samples for approval based on an exact match where possible, or the nearest brick blend/type to meet the required finish.

In addition, we offer our ‘Select Range’ of bricks which are manufactured exclusively for Taylor Maxwell by leading manufacturers and offer a wide range of finishes at very competitive price points.
